- Hi
- First, I think I should start by appologising to all those roots out
- there who will inevitably become immencly annoyed at finding this post
- on the 'wrong' newsgroup, so, SORRY!
- I have a really serious problem. It all started when I got
- Windoze95 and I tried to install it on my 2 pre-stone-age 128mb hard
- drives. Lets just say, watching win95 load gives watching paint dry a
- run for its money....
- I eventually gave in and bought myself a Western Digital 1.6GB hdd.
- The problem was that my motherboard didn't have LBA (Is it LBA, I
- danna, this is not my field of expertise....spelling isn't either). I
- was at first going to use EZ-DRIVE, but got many bad reports about it,
- and on top of that, my supplier forgot to include it with the drive.
- In the end I decided to partition the drive and format it on another
- computer, that way, only one 512mb (528mb was the max, but I wanted to
- avoid 32bit clusters) partition would be visible on my PC and the the
- others SHOULD magically appear when I upgrade in 4 months. This
- worked fine and the drive REALLY flew (I really recomend this
- drive!!!), until I installed win95. Scandisk claimed my drive wasn't
- setup correctly, so I bypassed scandisk and installed anyway. Then
- after installation, windows prepaired to load for the first time....it
- didn't. The solution in the end turned out to be to disable 32bit
- access to the drive and enable real mode access (something like that).
- This however made the drive a lot slower than it sould have been, and
- on top of that, 10mb of bad secters opened up at the end of the drive.
- Repairing these kept on crashing scandisk and it took at least 10
- tries to even put a dent in them. After fixing them, windows remained
- unstable, ie, when I loaded lots, and the swapfile got big, it crashed
- REALLY bad...worse than normal in other words.
- HEEEEEELP, WHAT CAN I DOOOOOOO???
-
- DO I
- * Re-hightlevel-format it
- * Low level Format it
- * Repartition it and format...
- * Just grit my teeth and use EZ-DRIVE
- * Live with the problem (not an option)
- * Sell my computer and change hobbies
-
- The formatting options, just arn't...er...options. I have nowhere to
- put all my data. If possible, I non-data-destructive solution is what
- I would like most.
- It may be an idea not to reply by email and (I am sure I am not the
- only one who has had this problem) allow others to read the solutions.
- NB: I am a rather serious C, Pascal, and assembly programmer, and
- will understand any suggestions without any problem.
